A pelvic examination is usually part of a routine check-up to catch signs of ovarian cysts, sexually transmitted infections, uterine fibroids or early stage cancer. Pelvic examinations are especially common during pregnancy. The doctor may also recommend a pelvic examination if you are experiencing gynecological symptoms such as pelvic muscle pain, unusual vaginal bleeding, skin changes, abnormal vaginal discharge or urinary problems outside the normal check-up. This allows your doctor to diagnose the causes of the symptoms that are bothering you. Depending on the situation, the doctor may recommend additional diagnostic tests or treatment.
